- Feta cheese: Substitute non-dairy feta to make the recipe without dairy.
- Greek yogurt: optional. You can use full-fat or fat-free Greek-style yogurt (the thick one). Substitute non-dairy Greek-style yogurt to make the recipe without dairy.
- Roasted bell peppers: You can use jarred or home-roasted bell peppers.
- Garlic: must be fresh for that spicy garlic tang.
- Vinegar: Apple cider, white wine, or red wine vinegar. Pick one. In my opinion, vinegar is essential to add acidity and cut through the rich feta flavor. It’s SO good!
- Chili flakes: Tirokafteri can go from mildly spicy to quite fiery. Adjust based on your taste.
- Dried oregano.
- Extra virgin olive oil.
How to make tirokafteri
Step 1: To a food processor, add most of the feta cheese, Greek yogurt, grated garlic, vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, dried oregano, chili flakes, and roasted red bell peppers. Blend for 2 minutes until creamy.
Step 2: In a serving bowl, mash the remaining feta with a fork for a rich and chunky texture. Stir in the creamy sauce.
Top with a pinch of oregano, chili flakes, and good olive oil. Serve with warm pita or crispy pita chips, veggie sticks, or next to grilled foods.
Pair it with hummus, baba ganoush, or mutabal for a spread night thatโs nothing short of unforgettable.
Tip
- Boost the Texture: After blending, add extra feta by mashing it with a fork or crumbling it by hand. This creates a richer, chunkier dip with a more satisfying bite.
- Donโt Hold Back on the Vinegar: A generous splash of vinegar is key! It adds the perfect hit of acidity and tang, making the flavors pop and giving the dip that irresistible, crave-worthy mouthfeel.
- Roast Your Own Peppers: For the best flavor, roast bell peppers at home! Bake them in the oven at 430ยฐF (220ยฐC) for 40 minutes or use an air fryer at 400ยฐF (200ยฐC) for 20 minutes. Want a step-by-step guide? Check out our full tutorial on how to roast peppers.
- To make pita chips, cut pita bread into triangles, toss in a drizzle of olive oil, and toast in the oven or air fryer until crunchy.
Frequently Asked Questions
This greek spicy feta dip can range from mildly spicy to very spicy. Feel free to adjust spiciness depending on your taste.
Sure. You can make this delicious dip without yogurt as Greeks don’t always add it in. We like to add yogurt because it makes the dip a little less salty and more creamy.
Yes. Feel free to swap non-dairy feta and yogurt to make it vegan. One thing though, try to find a non-dairy Greek-style yogurt that’s thick to have the best texture. If you can’t find a thick vegan yogurt add less so that the dip doesn’t get too runny.
Store leftovers in a bowl covered with plastic wrap or in an airtight container for 4-5 days.
The dip will thicken up in the fridge so give it a goo whip before serving.
Not suitable for freezing.
They are two similar dips. Htipiti means “beaten” in Greek and it’s generally made with chunkier pieces of cheese mashed with a fork.
