Ingredients

Chickpeas, sweet potato, flour, egg, parmesan, onion, and spices arranged on a kitchen counter.
  • Chickpeas: The heart of these healthy chickpea fritters. Use canned for convenience or cook dried chickpeas from scratch for a firmer texture.
  • Sweet potato: Adds natural sweetness, moisture, and fiber. Substitute cooked pumpkin or mashed butternut squash for a seasonal twist.
  • Flour: All-purpose works best for binding. Use chickpea flour for a gluten free veggie fritters version or oat flour for extra fiber.
  • Parmesan: Gives a rich, savory flavor. You can substitute crumbled feta.
  • Egg: Helps bind everything together.
  • Onion: Adds depth and a touch of sweetness. Shallots or green onions also work beautifully.
  • Garlic: Fresh is best, but garlic powder works in a pinch.
  • Oregano: Adds a warm Mediterranean flavor. Try Italian seasoning or thyme if thatโ€™s what you have.
  • Smoked paprika: Brings a smoky aroma and color. You can use regular paprika, taco seasoning, or ground cumin for a twist.
  • Olive oil: Use for cooking your sweet potato chickpea burgers or swap with avocado oil.

How to Make Sweet Potato Chickpea Fritters

Step 1 โ€“ Mash the Base

Prick the sweet potato with a fork and microwave it for about 7 minutes, or until a knife slides through easily. Cut it in half lengthwise and scoop the soft flesh into a large mixing bowl.

Add the drained and rinsed chickpeas and mash everything with a potato masher, leaving a few chunks for texture. This gives your vegetarian sweet potato fritters a hearty bite.

Step 1 โ€“ Mashed chickpeas and sweet potato mixture in a large bowl ready to mix.

Step 2 โ€“ Add Flavor and Binders

Stir in the chopped onion, grated garlic, grated parmesan, flour, egg, oregano, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until the mixture comes together and holds its shape. If it feels too soft, add a little more flour until itโ€™s easy to form into patties.

Step 2 โ€“ Adding onion, garlic, parmesan, and spices to mashed chickpea sweet potato mixture.

Step 3 โ€“ Shape and Cook

Scoop about 2 – 3 tablespoons of the mixture per fritter and shape into small patties. Heat a thin layer of olive oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat and cook each patty for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden and crisp.

You can also bake them at 400ยฐF (200ยฐC) for 20โ€“25 minutes or air fry at 375ยฐF (190ยฐC) for 10โ€“12 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and crisp.

Step 3 โ€“ Cooking patties in a skillet until golden and crispy on both sides.

Step 4 โ€“ Serve and Enjoy

Serve your warm patties with a dollop of Greek yogurt, tzatziki, or a simple lemony salad. Theyโ€™re perfect as a snack, in a wrap, or as a healthy main dish.

Step 4 โ€“ Serving chickpea sweet potato fritters with yogurt sauce and a squeeze of lemon.

Tips

  • Drain chickpeas well: Excess moisture makes the mix too soft and hard to shape, so pat them dry before mashing.
  • Donโ€™t overmash: Leave a few chunks for a hearty texture โ€” thatโ€™s what makes great sweet potato chickpea fritters.
  • Adjust flour as needed: If the mix feels too wet, add an extra spoonful of flour until it holds together easily.
  • Use a nonstick pan: It helps the high protein veggie patties brown evenly without sticking and without using too much oil.
  • Bake or air fry for a lighter option: Theyโ€™ll still turn out crispy and golden without much oil.
  • Add herbs for freshness: Chopped parsley, cilantro, or basil make the patties taste extra bright and fresh.
  • Serve with a dip: Try Greek yogurt, hummus, or tzatziki for a creamy balance.
  • Make ahead for meal prep: These vegetarian sweet potato patties store well and can be reheated in a skillet or air fryer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these chickpea sweet potato patties vegan?

Yes! Replace the egg with a flax egg or chia egg โ€” theyโ€™ll still hold together beautifully. Replace the parmesan with nutritional yeast or non-dairy feta.

Can I freeze them?

Absolutely. Let the sweet potato chickpea burgers cool completely, then freeze on a tray before transferring to a container or bag. Reheat in the oven or air fryer until warm and crisp.

How do I stop the mixture from falling apart?

the mixture should not fall apart if you follow our recipe. Make sure to drain the chickpeas well and donโ€™t skip the flour โ€” it helps the patties stay firm.

Can I bake instead of pan-frying?

Yes, bake at 400ยฐF (200ยฐC) for 20โ€“25 minutes or air fry at 375ยฐF (190ยฐC) for 10โ€“12 minutes.

What can I serve them with?

Theyโ€™re delicious with a fresh salad, Mediterranean bowl, inside a wrap, or alongside a dip like tzatziki or marinara sauce.

Dude, brilliant recipe, pretty easy. Fried and baked them different times, makes lots of dough for multiple meals. Just a great recipe.

    1. Hi Jimmy,
Haha, this made my morning โ€” thank you ๐Ÿ™‚
So happy the patties worked well for you both fried and baked.

Thanks for cooking with us, and taking time to rate the recipe. All the best,

      Louise

OK so not to keep going to the well on this, but I wanted your input before I ruin a whole batch. I LOVVVVEE my jalapenos – I was thinking of trying to incorporate a little heat into the recipe – do you think it would work to substitute a steamed jalapeno for some of the sweet potato? Or would it work better to just add some diced jalapeno with the spice step? (Or BOTH lol?). Thank you!

        1. Hi James,
Iโ€™d keep the recipe exactly as is, and just add a little diced jalapeรฑo with the spices. Itโ€™ll give you that lovely crunch and heat without messing with the texture.
Such a good idea!! All the best,

          Louise

This was tasty but needs a little more salt/flavoring. Part of it was my fault- I donโ€™t have chickpeas so subbed cannellini beans. Having said all that, I plan on making it again!! I may try butternut squash since that scores better for me regarding sugar spikes. Iโ€™ll let you know how that turns out!

    1. Hi Julie,
Yes – cannellini beans are softer than chickpeas, so the mix can taste milder and softer. Add salt to taste, bump spices (paprika/oregano), and if needed mix in 1โ€“2 Tbsp flour to firm it up.
Butternut squash is a good idea. If you test it, do let us know what you think!!

      All the best, Louise

        1. Amazing, Maggie, make-again-recipes are just the best ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks so much for sharing your feedback here. Warmest,

          Louise

Thank you for the recipe! It was simple to prep, and even easier to make. My sister loved the patties, and so did I. Going to have to add this to my list of go-to recipes.

Delish! Relatively easy to make. I paired it with greek yogurt mixed with some powdered ranch dressing.

Do we know nutritional contents of these tasty bits?

    1. Love the thyme and rosemary twist, Angela – I’m so glad they turned out scrumptious.

Thanks for cooking with us ๐Ÿฅณ.

    1. Hi Gloria,

Sure, this batch makes about 10โ€“12 patties (2โ€“3 Tbsp each). A serving is 2โ€“3 patties per personโ€”roughly ยผ of the recipe. I hope this helps ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. What would go well with these besides a salad for a complete dinner? Iโ€™m thinking of using these more so as a side dishโ€ฆ any ideas?

    1. Hi Vic, they are great as a side with any two of these for a full dinner:

โ€“ A grain: herby rice, quinoa, or couscous
โ€“ A veg: roasted broccoli/cauliflower, garlicky greens, or glazed carrots
      โ€“ A sauce/bread: yogurt-tahini or tzatziki + warm pita/flatbread
โ€“ Pair with a simple soup (tomato, veggie, or lentil)
      – Or serve in a burger bun with your favorite condiments ๐Ÿ™‚

      I hope this helps!
